The purpose of the Bookfair is to provide a forum for trade in books and rights for publishers, booksellers, distributors, teachers, librarian and the public at large. The 14th Nairobi International Book Fair was held from 28th Sept – 2nd October, 2011 at the Sarit Centre, Westland’s at the Expo Hall. In total there were 85 exhibitors. They comprising of 70 local and 15 international exhibitors (among them were publishers, book sellers, /book distributors, printers, government departments, UN agencies and non-governmental organizations).
There were 15 international exhibitors drawn countries that included India, Senegal, Iran, Ethiopia South Africa, China, USA, Uganda and Tanzania
Opening ceremony: It took place on the 29th September 2011 at the Sarit Centre Expo Hall from 10.30am. Prof. Francis J. Gichaga, Chancellor, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, officially opened the Bookfair.
Closing Ceremony / Jomo Kenyatta Prize for Literature: It took place on 1st October 2011 at the Nairobi Serena. The guest of honor was Prof. Martin Buyu, DVC, Vice Chancellor, USIU. See Jomo Kenyatta Prize for Literature Award- 2011
Children Activity:
The children’s activity, took place on 1st October, 2011 at Westland’s Primary School sponsored by Oxford University Press. In participation were 400 pupils from upper primary pupils from primary schools in Nairobi. There were also 30 teachers, 4 facilitators and 3 city education officers. The major highlight of this workshop was that in collaboration with the city department, all the pupils who had participated in the event and had won in any category for the last seven years were invited along with other pupils from there schools. The pupils were engaged in creative writing, poetry writing, composition writing and drawing the theme being read and grow. The children were each presented with a certificate of participation. All the winners were given certificates and books as a gift for there excellent performance.
Events:
Events at the Bookfair included books launches, exam clinic workshops, budding author’s seminar, Iranian cultural council meeting with publishers, seminars on topical issues and literary debates.
Attendance: Statistics taken at the Bookfair indicated that 23,874 people visited- (Adults 14,620 and Students 9,254 (Male: 12,145 Female: 11,729)
