GEM Counseling Services was founded in 1993 under the Registration of Business Names Act (Cap 499, Section 4) to help people who experience psychological and emotional problems. Since that time, counsel and emotional support has been offered to literally hundreds of couples and thousands of individuals. These services are offered upon request through appointments at very affordable fees. The counselling approach adopted in helping clients is holistic whereby people are viewed as emotional, spiritual, physical, intellectual and social beings, hence GEM’s motto, “Aiming for wholeness and holiness”. Quality counselling is offered by adequately trained and qualified therapists, counsellors and trainers. There is also commitment to training and equipping counsellors and clients with relevant skills through seminars and talks so that they are better prepared to help themselves and others; the education of people on what counselling is and demonstrating the place and value of counselling; encouragement to seek counselling in times of need; taking counselling services to the rural areas through organization of rural community outreach programs to individuals, families and groups by availing counsellors to address the concerns people may have as individuals, couples, families and groups in the rural contexts; educating clients and consumers about the unique challenges they face in the African context; and teaching people to appreciate counselling services rendered to them by encouraging them to pay for such services, however minimally.
GEM services include: Individual counselling- for children, adolescents and adults; marital/marriage counselling.; premarital preparation; family counselling- for the whole family or for available members; group counselling on a variety of concerns; support groups and therapy groups for individuals with serious concerns they wish to work through e.g. discordant couples. Areas of expertise include: marital counselling; family counselling; sexual abuse including rape, incest, sexual and gender identity issues; addictions counselling; provision of personal therapy for students in counsellor training; supervision of practicing counsellors- individual as well as in a group; psychological assessment and testing including psychological reports; organizing and giving tailored talks, seminars and lectures e.g. pastoral families, pastors’ wives, conflict management, counselling skills, counselling in the workplace, preparation for retirement, pastoral counselling, loss and grief counselling; guidance and counselling, stress management, depression, women’s issues, cross-cultural counselling, adolescent issues; consultancy on pioneering, setting up and management of counselling centres; bibliotherapy- good counselling books are availed to clients to complement the counselling they are receiving; and , e- counselling i.e. counselling through e mail.
GEM publications aim at producing good quality counselling materials/literature in the form of books, manuals, booklets and brochures to back up efforts of clients and counsellors in the community.
